In 1970, Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints set the NFL field goal record of 63 yards at Tulane Stadium. The record stood untouched for almost three decades until in 1998, Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos tied it at Mile High Stadium. At the post game press conference Denver coach Mike Shanahan speculated that Elam’s kick was longer saying: “I think Jason’s got him by about half a foot.”
